Testing Babies for Hearing Problems
Periodic hearing tests are recommended for people of all ages, but hearing tests are particularly important for babies. Many times, parents do not realize that there may be a problem with their infant's hearing until the child is unable to learn to talk.
Premature babies, or babies who were born ill or whose mothers had viral infections such as rubella during pregnancy have a special need for hearing testing.
If the hearing defect is something that the child has been born with, a professional can help the chid early by fitting the youngster with hearing aids. Children can also receive help with lip reading, speaking, and if necessary, sign language.
